Officials have identified the sixth grader killed in a school shooting Thursday in Perry, Iowa.
Ahmir Jolliff, 11, was shot three times and his death was ruled a homicide by the Iowa State Medical Examiner on Friday. The Iowa Department of Public Safety said an additional two people were hurt.
Investigators say Dylan Butler, a 17-year-old student at Perry High School, opened fire before school began with a pump-action shotgun and a small-caliber handgun. Butler died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Jolliff's mother told the Associated Press that Ahmir was a joyful child – known as "Smiley" around the house – and kept a container of toys unlocked in their front yard so anyone could play with them.
Iowa DPS say seven others total were hurt, an increase by two from previous reports. Three of the surviving victims are school staff and four are students. Investigators say Perry High School Principal Dan Marburger was shot multiple times and is still in critical condition Friday.
"The investigation thus far confirms Principal Marburger acted selflessly and placed himself in harm’s way in an apparent effort to protect his students," a release from Iowa DPS reads.
Two of the injured students are still in the hospital. All others have been treated and released.
State investigators say they have seized a large number of digital and social media evidence that will take time to review. They are also conducting eyewitness accounts and victim interviews.
"Once the investigation is complete, the DCI’s investigative report will be turned over to the Dallas County Attorney’s Office to determine what additional course of action, if any, should be undertaken," the release reads.
Perry Community School District Superintendent Clark Wicks announced late Friday afternoon that high school classes will not be in session all next week. Elementary classes will begin next Friday at the earliest.
Wicks said the elementary and middle schools are in good shape but parts of the high school are damaged and need cleaned or repaired.
