A 23-year-old man was arrested and extradited from Colorado in connection with a shooting in Northeast D.C. that left a Venezuelan migrant dead in mid-November, according to Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) officials.
Officers said they responded to an Exxon gas station in the 2200 block of New York Avenue on November 16 around 5:20 p.m. for a reported shooting.
When they arrived, officers said they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound.
The man – later identified as Venezuelan national Carlos Javier Blanco Fernandez, 38 – was taken to a hospital where he died.
Witnesses told 7News the shooting victim was working under the hood of his car when he was shot. They said they did not believe he was the intended target. D.C. police have not confirmed that.
Blanco Fernandez’s family members told 7News he was among the refugees who arrived in the District by bus in September.
On Monday, Dec. 4, members of the U.S. Marshals Task Force found and arrested 23-year-old Eliexander Lopez-Burgos in Glendale, Colorado, according to officials.
Lopez-Burgos was extradited to D.C., officials said. He was charged on January 4 with first-degree murder.
